Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 26 (PTI) - A tragic incident has occurred in Aryanad, where a 48-year-old female panchayat member was found dead. The deceased, Sreeja S, was a local Congress worker and represented the Kottakkakam ward in the Aryanad village panchayat. She was discovered in a shed adjacent to her home on Tuesday morning.

According to the police, preliminary suspicions point to her death being caused by the consumption of an acidic substance. Despite efforts to save her by rushing her to a nearby hospital, she was unfortunately declared dead upon arrival.

"Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. An investigation is currently underway. Her husband has informed us of her financial difficulties, which may have contributed to this tragic event," a police officer stated.

In response to the incident, local Congress leaders have claimed that the CPI (M)'s campaign, which targeted Sreeja over her financial issues, was the driving factor behind her taking this extreme step. They have since staged a protest in the panchayat, expressing their grievances over the matter.
