Kozhikode, Kerala: A new case of amoebic encephalitis has been reported in this northern district of Kerala, with a woman testing positive for the rare brain infection. This condition is caused by a free-living amoeba found in contaminated waters, health authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The latest case was confirmed on Wednesday when a 43-year-old woman tested positive for the infection, according to a senior health official from the district.

With this new diagnosis, the number of patients receiving treatment for amoebic encephalitis at the Kozhikode Medical College has climbed to 10.

This group of patients includes four children, among whom are two relatives of a nine-year-old girl who succumbed to the infection earlier this month, the official reported.

The patients originate from the districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Malappuram, he further added.

Amoebic encephalitis, a devastating condition, is caused by free-living amoeba. Individuals typically contract it from freshwater environments such as lakes, rivers, and streams.
