Kaliganj (WB) - On Tuesday, the Trinamool Congress announced Alifa Ahmed as its candidate for the Kaliganj Assembly by-election in Nadia district of West Bengal, set for June 19. Alifa Ahmed, daughter of the late Trinamool Congress MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed, steps into the political arena following her father's demise in February, which prompted this by-election.

Affectionately known as 'Lal da', Nasiruddin Ahamed was 70 years old at the time of his passing. "Under the inspiration and guidance of Hon'ble Chairperson Smt. Mamata Banerjee, we are pleased to announce the candidate for the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly By-election scheduled for June 19, 2025. Kaliganj candidate is Alifa Ahmed," the party proclaimed on X.

As a seasoned leader, Ahamed represented the Kaliganj constituency multiple times, clinching victories in 2011 and 2021, albeit with a hiatus in 2016. The Kaliganj assembly constituency now boasts approximately 2.5 lakh registered voters after a recent revision of electoral rolls.

The seat holds considerable political significance, with the ruling party relying on the legacy of the late leader and the fresh appeal of his daughter to retain control of the constituency.
