Ahmedabad, Jun 18 (PTI): A week has passed since the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, and efforts to identify the victims continue. An official reported on Wednesday that DNA matching has helped identify at least 190 victims, with 159 bodies returned to their families.
The catastrophe involved Air India flight AI-171, bound for London with 242 passengers and crew. The plane crashed on June 12, claiming the lives of everyone on board except for one. Additionally, nearly 29 individuals on the ground perished when the aircraft collided with a medical complex.
The challenging task of identifying victims has necessitated DNA testing, as many bodies were charred or damaged beyond recognition. Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital's medical superintendent, informed reporters, "As of Wednesday morning, 190 DNA samples have been matched, and 159 bodies have been handed over to the respective families. The process of matching DNA samples of other bodies is still ongoing."
The state government previously indicated that samples from 250 victims—comprising both those on the aircraft and casualties on the ground—were collected for identification.
