Chennai, July 3 (PTI) — D Jayakumar, a former AIADMK state minister, questioned Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday regarding his expression of "sorry" to the family of Ajith Kumar, a security guard who died in police custody. Jayakumar asked whether an apology could bring the deceased back to life. Ajith Kumar's death on June 28 in Sivaganga district marks the 25th custodial death in Tamil Nadu.

Addressing reporters, the AIADMK leader criticized the Chief Minister's apology to the grieving family and questioned if similar apologies were given to the families of the other 24 individuals who have died in custody. "Stalin should have resigned instead," stated Jayakumar, questioning the silence of social activists and film personalities who typically support the DMK.

Ajith Kumar, employed as a security guard at the Badrakaliamman temple in Thiruppuvanam, Sivaganga district, allegedly died during police custody related to a theft case interrogation on June 28, with an assault video surfacing online. In response, five policemen have been arrested, and the case has been handed over to the CBI.

Jayakumar emphasized AIADMK's efforts to obtain justice for Kumar's family. "Such an uncivilized and barbaric act is unacceptable to humanity. The family's pain and sorrow will become a curse for the DMK. The 2026 elections will witness a regime change due to these custodial deaths," Jayakumar asserted.
