Ahmedabad, June 13 (PTI): Following a tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, the bodies of six victims have been returned to their families after successful identification on Friday, according to police reports.

After the catastrophic incident on Thursday, a total of 265 bodies were transferred to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. Only six victims were identifiable as their facial features remained intact, with confirmation provided by Inspector Chirag Gosai.

He informed us that DNA profiling efforts are in progress to determine the identities of other victims, as the condition of their bodies is severely charred.

"We have returned six bodies to their relatives. The process has begun to collect DNA samples from relatives to identify those bodies which are beyond recognition. Relatives of 215 deceased individuals have approached authorities to contribute their samples," explained Inspector Gosai, who oversees operations at the post-mortem facility.

Details are gathered from relatives arriving at the PM room and subsequently, they are directed to BJ Medical College to provide their DNA samples.

"The process of matching DNA samples will take approximately 72 hours. Once a match is confirmed, the bodies will be handed over to their families from the post-mortem facility," Gosai added.

The ill-fated Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI 171), carrying 242 people, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, crashed into a medical college complex in the Meghaninagar area shortly after departing from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

Tragically, only one person survived the disaster while the remaining 241 onboard, comprising 168 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian, lost their lives.

Among the casualties were four MBBS students and a doctor's wife, who were in the BJ Medical College complex adjacent to the airport perimeter.
