The UNHRC on Wednesday took a vote on resolution for ‘Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka’. India however abstained from a crucial vote on Sri Lanka’s rights record.
The resolution was, however, adopted after 22 states of the 47-member Council voted in its favour. The resolution gives the UN body a mandate to collect evidence of crimes committed during the country's brutal civil war against the LTTE.
Terming the development a 'gross betrayal of the Tamil people', Congress leader P Chidambaram tweeted, urging the people of the southern state to punish the AIADMK-BJP alliance in the upcoming assembly elections.
