For the ease of studying tigers and assessing human-tiger conflict, a radio collar has been fitted on to a male tiger in the Sunderbans for the first time.
The big cat was released into the wild close to a human settlement in the Basirhat range on Sunday.
The initiative was undertaken jointly by officials from West Bengal government's wildlife wing and World Wide Fund for Nature. Incidents of tigers straying into nearby villages are common in the region.
Three more tigers will be collared soon and studied over the next three years.
