Researchers from the University of Hyderabad have created a low-cost method that can help sort plastic waste, a process considered to be crucial for recycling.
The method makes use of a technique called laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy to generate data on different kinds of plastic.
This data is then combined with machine learning to identify the different types of plastic. Their method showed 97% average accuracy in identifying the samples from plastic waste, a Times of India report said.
The research paper has been published in optics and photonics news (OPN) year review 2020, published by Optical Society of America.
