Some common ingredients found in sunscreens may be harmful for freshwater organisms, a new study by the University of Alberta biologists has found.
Exposure to Ultraviolet filters may prove to be lethal for these marine organisms. One of the largest source of this UV Filter contamination comes from sunscreen that washes off the skin while swimming.
For the study, effects of UV filters was noticed on Daphnia magna, a marine animal. Exposure over a 48 hour period prevented them from navigating their way through the environment while a 14 day exposure proved to be lethal for them.
However, these species were able to recover once the contamination was removed.
