How animal poop in Antarctica is helping lives thrive

Biologists studying Antarctica have made a very intriguing discovery about excreta. A new study published in the journal Current Biology found that penguin and seal excreta in the Antarctic region is supporting thriving communities of primary producers. With the help of ammonia that evaporates from the feces, communities of mosses and lichens and vast numbers of microscopic animals like springtails and mites are thriving for more than one 1,000 meters beyond the colony.The study also established the depth of the interconnection of the planet's ecosystem.
