The 28th of July every year is commemorated as 'World Hepatitis Day'. According to a new report by the World Health Organization, we have achieved a milestone target as the proportion of children under the age of 5 years infected by viral hepatitis B has dropped to just under 1% in 2019, going down from around 5% in the 'pre-vaccine era'. WHO director-general Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus shared that the most important strategy remains preventing mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B. Thus, even amid a global pandemic, WHO urges nations to ensure that the testing of pregnant women and provision of antiviral prophylaxis continues and everyone has access to hepatitis B immunization and birth dose vaccine. The infection claims the lives of approximately 9,00,000 people each year. Infants are especially vulnerable and preventing the infection in them means reducing the number of cases of liver damage and liver cancer in future generations.
