The Supreme Court will today hear a public interest litigation asking the probe in the Hathras alleged gangrape and murder to be headed by a former judge. The PIL has said that a "fair" investigation is needed and pointed to inaction on the part of UP Police. The UP police and govt have come under fire for the handling of the case, confrontations with opposition leaders and a secretive 2.30 am cremation of the body. The PIL also wants the trial, when it does start, to be shifted from UP to Delhi. The UP govt has already recommended a CBI probe.
