Teeth grinding and jaw clenching, also called bruxism, is a common condition that can occur either when you are awake or during your sleep. The majority of people who grind their teeth or clench their jaw do so without even realising it. This condition can worsen over time and it is important to be able to identify its symptoms and possible causes.
As per the NHS, UK, the common symptoms of teeth grinding are facial pain, headaches, earache, pain and stiffness in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, disrupted sleep and worn down or broken teeth.
The cause of this condition is still unclear. It is usually linked to stress, anxiety, sleep disorders and lifestyle habits like consumption of alcohol and smoking.
The NHS suggests seeing a dentist if your teeth are worn, damaged or sensitive; your jaw, face or ear is in pain, or people around you tell you that you make a grinding sound in your sleep.
