The apex food regulator, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), is considering a threshold value of 1% as a labelling requirement for genetically modified food items in India. This value is the maximum level of unavoidable GM content in food that does not call for labelling. In July, the food regulator was criticized after the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) found GM content in 3 out of every 10 packaged food samples that were tested.
