The first person known to have been cured of HIV infection, Timothy Ray Brown, is now suffering from a relapse of cancer, he told the Associated Press in an interview. Brown, who is also called the 'Berlin patient' because of the place he was at the time of treatment, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2006 and HIV in the 1990s. After a transplant from a donor with a rare resistance to the AIDS virus, it was believed that his leukemia and HIV infection was cured. The 54 year old still shows no signs of HIV but his cancer returned in 2019. He said in an interview that it has spread widely and he is receiving hospice care in California. Speaking of his transplant he added he was glad he got it done as it opened new doors for scientists to find a cure.
