21 people participating in a mountain marathon cross country race lost their lives due to extreme weather conditions on Saturday, reported Chinese local media. The 100 km long mountain race started on Saturday morning from the high altitude Huanghe Shillin Mountain in Baiyin city. While it was sunny when the race started, by 1 pm the local weather conditions drastically changed as freezing rain and wind along with hailstones hit the terrain. As the temperature fell, the competitors who were only wearing shorts and thin t-shirts suffered from hypothermia. Over 700 rescuers were deployed to search for the participants in the Yellow River Stone Forest Tourist site. Out of the 171 competitors, 151 have been rescued including 8 runners who are currently under hospital care.
