Arsenal was shown the door from European football as Villarreal knocked out the Premier League side from the semifinals of the Europa League. A goalless draw at the Emirates was enough as Villarreal won the tie on a 2-1 aggregate after they won the 1st leg. The Gunners had many chances in the game but only fired blanks as the Spanish club kept total control over the game. Mikel Arteta's side struggled to find the back of the net through the game as it was a revenge of sorts for Villarreal's boss Unai Emery who Arsenal had fired in 2019. Arsenal and its fans are now staring at a prospect of no European football next season for the first time in 25 years.
