Mumbai, Jul 30 (PTI) Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan's acclaimed 2005 movie "Parineeta," adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's iconic 1914 Bengali novel, is set for a re-release on its 20th anniversary, August 29. PVR INOX and Vinod Chopra Films announced the screening of the film’s restored version across Indian theatres.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who produced the film and recently gained praise for directing "12th Fail," expressed a deep emotional connection to "Parineeta." "It’s more than just a film; it’s a journey of love, elegance, and soulful music," he said. "Every frame holds emotion, evolving with the story in a way that touches something deep. Now, in the restored 8k version, the visuals are even richer, capturing the grandeur of old Kolkata with timeless beauty. I am so proud of Pradeep Sarkar for his incredible work on the film."

Set in 1960s Kolkata, the movie follows childhood friends, Lalita (Balan) and Shekhar (Khan), who develop romantic feelings. Trouble arises as Shekhar's father aims to take over Lalita's uncle's house for a hotel project. A family friend, Girish (played by Sanjay Dutt), assists Lalita, causing misunderstandings between her and Shekhar.

For Vidya Balan, "Parineeta" marked her Bollywood debut, making its re-release a deeply emotional event. "Parineeta is where it all began... Every frame of this film carries a piece of my heart," she stated. "I’m forever grateful to Pradeep da and Mr. Vinod Chopra for their belief in me. Even after years, the film, its songs, and the feelings it evoked remain memorable. People often say each frame is like a painting, capturing Pradeep Sarkar’s magic. I hope a new generation discovers the love in 'Parineeta.'"

Saif Ali Khan regarded the film as a pivotal moment in his career. "It allowed me to explore a quieter, restrained side of my personality," he recalled. "It had elegance, depth, and an old-world charm. Working with Vidya, Pradeep da, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sanju, and the team was special. This film will always hold a meaningful place in my journey.” Sanjay Dutt, who played a significant role, shared that "Parineeta" was his second collaboration with Chopra after "Munnabhai MBBS." "I have wonderful memories and am happy a new generation will experience it on the big screen," he said.

The film is equally known for Shantanu Moitra’s unforgettable compositions like "Piyu Bole," "Kasto Mazza," "Kaisi Paheli Zindagani," and more. Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist at PVR INOX, noted that audiences are eager to experience classics in theatres. "'Parineeta' is a timeless film—a graceful exploration of love, class, and women’s evolving roles in early 20th-century India. It’s a jewel in Vidhu Vinodh Chopra’s cinematic legacy. We are thrilled to reintroduce the film in a stunning, restored print," she stated, inviting both new and nostalgic audiences.
