New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) An evening of dastangoi is set to honor the iconic filmmaker Guru Dutt through poetry, music, and storytelling at Kamani Auditorium on October 11.

The musical tribute, "Dastan-e-Guru Dutt", coincides with both his birth centenary and his death anniversary, taking place this Friday.

Written by Abbas Qamar, this unique dastan will be brought to life by Fouzia Dastango, renowned for her portrayals of figures like Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Krishna, and Ram.

Fouzia will be joined by singer Latika Jain, who will perform songs from Dutt’s films.

This presentation integrates Dutt’s life and artistic legacy with the traditional art of storytelling and music.

In a statement, Fouzia Dastango expressed, "Guru Dutt is not merely a name; he signifies an emotion, an eternal essence that captured profound human emotions through his cinema. With ‘Dastan-e-Gurudutt’, I aim to connect today’s generation with his life and artistry, ensuring his brilliance continues to illuminate the world."

Fouzia and Jain will offer a singular storytelling style, interweaving narrative with songs, either original compositions or pieces from Guru Dutt’s films.

"I feel immensely privileged," Jain remarked, "to be part of Guru Dutt’s legacy. Participating in a show that commemorates such an influential figure, whose creativity remains brilliant at his centenary, is indescribably honorable. When I perform his songs on stage, I feel I am conveying his stories under his guidance. It is both a chance and a duty, motivating me to aspire for lasting art akin to what Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt achieved."

The production, under the guidance of Roopali and Vikas Jalan, is founded on research executed by Asha Batra, the visionary behind the digital archive Cinemaazi.

"Cultural events that celebrate music, dance, art, and theater are crucial for promoting cultural awareness," said Jalan. "They honor different traditions, promote mutual understanding, and elucidate various cultural identities. These artistic endeavors create connections between communities and cultivate an appreciation for global heritage. Our initiative is a humble step in this endeavor."
