Chennai, Nov 7 (PTI) Directors often come under scrutiny for re-releasing old films, with accusations of doing so merely for financial gain. However, Tamil film director Cheran insists that much effort went into making his iconic film, 'Autograph', appealing to today’s Gen Z audience.

The film, celebrated as a cult classic following its original release, is set to hit theaters again on November 14, precisely 21 years since it first captured audiences. Cheran revealed during an event on November 6, where the film's cast and crew gathered to celebrate the re-release, that significant changes were made to the film to modernize it. “I have reduced the film’s length by about 15 minutes. In addition, I’ve updated the color grading to appeal to contemporary viewers and incorporated Dolby Atmos sound to enhance the audience experience,” he stated.

Cheran also disclosed that the film’s original score underwent a transformation to better match current musical tastes. “My aim is not to deceive audiences. If I released the film as it originally was, it would still attract viewers. I could accept Rs 10 lakh as profit and move on. Instead, I reinvested Rs 50 lakh to deliver a more enriching film experience,” Cheran explained.

When 'Autograph' originally premiered, its overwhelming success surprised the filmmakers, according to many of the crew members present. Cheran, who assumed the lead role himself after several prominent actors—such as Vikram, Vijay, Prabhu Deva, and Arvind Swami—turned down the role, received initial skepticism from his team for this decision. It was also mentioned that Sneha, a well-known actress at the time, joined the cast later, even though the production had a modest budget. Cinematographer Ravi Varman shared, “We devised an innovative plan involving Reynolds pen as a brand sponsor, appropriate since the film is titled ‘Autograph’. This sponsorship allowed us to afford Sneha's market rate.”

The film earned multiple accolades, including the Best Popular Film award, Best Female Playback Singer, and Best Lyrics during the 52nd National Awards. Additionally, it received recognition from the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Playback Singer.

Sneha expressed confidence that 'Autograph' would continue to resonate with audiences and draw fans back to theaters. “Positively, fans will enjoy revisiting the film on the big screen. My own father has already urged me to take him to see it again,” she expressed. Notably, at a time when female roles were commonly restricted to romantic interests, Sneha’s character, Divya, served as a significant friend who guided the protagonist to maturity. This portrayal of male-female friendship is one reason ‘Autograph’ is hailed as a progressive film.

Art Director M Jayakumar, a recipient of the Kalaimamani Award, initially hesitated to work on 'Autograph', primarily because Cheran also served as the producer. “I feared the props wouldn’t receive adequate funding, and I wanted to avoid disputes. Knowing each other from Cheran's time as an assistant director for Kamal Haasan's ‘Mahanadhi’, I initially declined. However, Cheran convinced me, and I’m deeply grateful to have participated in the making of the film,” Jayakumar stated.

Cheran, a four-time National Film Award winner, shared that his motivation for re-releasing 'Autograph' is to discover its relevance to the current youth, often seen as a force for societal change. “I create films to connect with society, to inspire and be inspired. If commercial success were my sole aim, I’d have disappeared long ago. When my film guides someone towards positive change, that’s my true achievement,” Cheran concluded.
