New Delhi, Sep 26 (PTI) - Filmmaker Varsha Bharath marks her directorial debut with "Bad Girl," a Tamil coming-of-age film crafted from her longing for representation on screen.

Bharath, who grew up immersed in Tamil cinema, shared how she seldom saw her stories reflected, which fueled her desire to create "a chick flick" in her language that resonated with her experiences. "It was born out of a need," Bharath explained in an interview with PTI.

Her objective was to offer women a portrayal of genuine emotions and feelings on screen. "Just looking at the screen and feeling represented makes you feel a little less alone," she noted, emphasizing the importance of visual representation over rhetoric. The film, featuring Anjali Sivaraman in the lead, follows the character Ramya as she navigates her transition from high school to adulthood.

Though the film's events are fictional, Bharath revealed that the emotions depicted are deeply personal. "It's not an autobiographical film," she said, but the feelings of alienation and loss echo her own.

Bharath described the film's title, "Bad Girl," as sarcastic, acknowledging misconceptions in Chennai where some interpreted it literally. "The title is just a way of saying that all of these labels are not really true," she clarified, pointing to societal labels imposed on women for expressing desires.

The film stirred controversy with allegations of Brahmin-bashing, but Bharath insisted her intent was to critique casteism from her personal perspective. "Brahmin bashing was definitely not the intention," she stated. Bharath highlighted the necessity of being critical of one's own community to incite change.

The filmmaker previously served as an assistant director under Vetrimaaran on acclaimed films such as "Visaranai" and "Vada Chennai." Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap both championed Bharath's growth throughout the filmmaking process, freeing her from commercial pressures to focus on crafting a quality film.

Released in Tamil on September 5 and in Hindi shortly thereafter, "Bad Girl" also stars Shanthi Priya, Saranya Ravichandran, Hridhu Haroon, TeeJay Arunasalam, and Sashank Bommireddipalli, with music by Amit Trivedi.
