London, Oct 28 (PTI): Arthur Conan Doyle, the renowned British author and creator of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, is set to become the focal character in the new India-UK feature film co-production, "Elementary My Dear Holmes".

The film was officially announced at a special event at the historic Guildhall in London on Monday. The project will be directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Srijit Mukherji, known for acclaimed Bengali films such as "Autograph", "Jaatishwar", and "Gumnaami". It is being produced by Shahnaab Alam.

Mukherji intends to delve into the life and legacy of Conan Doyle, exploring the intersections between his real life and the fictional world he created. “Doyle’s stories focused on the anatomy of curiosity, the drive to look deeper,” said Mukherji, who developed a fascination with Sherlock Holmes' stories during his school years.

"Elementary My Dear Holmes" envisions Conan Doyle stepping into his own fiction, confronting the clarity he formulated and applying it to a messier reality. The narrative sets off with the murder of Mrs. Gilchrist and the unjust arrest of Oscar Slater. “What intrigues me isn’t the crime, but the blending of imagination with reality,” Mukherji remarked.

The director expressed his commitment to crafting a film that mirrors the precision and deliberation of Doyle’s writing style. “Victorian London,” he stated, “serves as an atmosphere of reason and decay, where intellect and morality often conflict. This goes beyond an adaptation; it’s a reflection on creation itself, probing when your invention begins to scrutinize you.”

Mukherji will produce the film through Matchcut Productions, in collaboration with Alam’s London-based Invisible Thread. The project falls under the UK-India Co-Production Treaty, administered by the British Film Institute (BFI) and India’s National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).

Producer Shahnaab Alam highlighted the film's significance as a period drama reflecting the shared cultural and literary legacy between the two nations. “Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes represent possibly the UK’s greatest literary-cultural exports,” he noted.

Alam described the project as a captivating personal journey into the diverse talents of Conan Doyle, who was not only a legendary author but also a physician, military doctor, private investigator, psychic researcher, and more.

The project has received endorsement from the Conan Doyle Estate, represented at the launch by CEO Tim Hubbard and Doyle family members Richard Pooley and Richard Doyle. Pooley underscored Conan Doyle's real-life advocacy against injustice, exemplified in his campaign for George Edalji, a wrongfully convicted Indian lawyer in early 20th-century England.

The launch event, which was hosted by City of London Councilman Munsur Ali, also featured a curated exhibition of rare artefacts from the Conan Doyle Estate, highlighting the author's multifaceted pursuits beyond literature.
