Mumbai, Jul 29 (PTI) Superstar Aamir Khan has announced that his latest film, "Sitaare Zameen Par," will be available on YouTube Movies on demand after its theatrical release. Starting from August 1, the film will be available exclusively on YouTube in India for Rs 100. It will also be accessible in 38 international markets, including the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and others, with localized pricing for each region.
Directed by R S Prasanna, "Sitaare Zameen Par," was released in theaters nationwide in June and has grossed over Rs 250 crores while receiving accolades for its heartwarming narrative and performances. The film is billed as a spiritual sequel to Aamir’s critically acclaimed 2007 movie, “Taare Zameen Par,” and follows the journey of a basketball coach, portrayed by Aamir, who mentors ten differently-abled individuals. This remake of the Spanish movie "Champions" features Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar. Genelia D'Souza also plays a pivotal role.
Aamir expressed his long-time ambition for cinema to reach audiences who have limited access to theaters. “For the past 15 years, I have been struggling with the challenge of how to reach audiences who do not have geographical access to theatres, or those who are unable to make it. Finally, the perfect time has come," he said. He emphasized the role of the government's digital initiatives, such as UPI, and the widespread reach of the internet and YouTube, in making cinema more accessible and affordable.
Aamir hopes this digital release will empower creative voices to transcend geographical and other barriers, providing opportunities for emerging talent in the cinema industry. “If this idea works, creative voices can tell different stories breaking geographical and other barriers,” he added.
Gunjan Soni, Country Managing Director of YouTube India, lauded the digital exclusive launch on their platform as a step toward democratizing Indian film distribution globally. “YouTube is already a key digital destination for premium content, and we're excited to offer filmmakers and content owners unparalleled digital reach and flexibility. We're eager to see Indian cinema stride onto the global stage,” she said.
Aamir is presently producing "Lahore 1947," starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, and "Ek Din," featuring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi, both under Aamir Khan Productions.
