It is believed that Mughal Emperor Jehangir's Begum, Noor Jahan, was greatly influenced by this Turkish embroidery in the 17th century and this is how this artisanal work came to India.
The work chikan in chikankari comes from the Turkish word 'chikh' which means perforation. The handwork looks delicate, refined and very lightweight making it perfect for India’s scorching summers.
