The empowered group tasked with formulating the nation’s Covid emergency strategy has asked the central govt to prepare for 4-5 lakh cases of Covid-19 daily in the next surge and also urged them to take all steps to ensure that the figure doesn't go above 50,000 per day, according to a report by the Indian Express.

Empowered Group-1, headed by Niti Aayog member V K Paul, has suggested that the level can be kept at 50,000 cases by “non-pharmacological” interventions that include Covid-appropriate behaviour — mask hygiene and distancing — and carefully calibrated lockdowns, the report added.

The group has recommended a health infrastructure of 2 lakh ICU beds – including 1.2 lakh ventilated ICU beds; 5 lakh oxygen-enabled beds and 10 lakh Covid isolation care beds by September 2021.
