It may be a fact hard to digest but spirulina is a species of cyanobacteria, a form of blue green algae, safe for human consumption. The superfood is available either in its powder form or in the form of tablets, but what's the secret behind its goodness?

Spirulina oozes with 60% protein, and serves as a great alternative to vegetarians seeking newer sources of protein in their diet. It not only helps enhance muscle health, but increases the metabolic rate and aids heart health.

If you're looking for non-dairy alternatives to milk, it's got to be spirulina. The algae, it is believed, has 180% more calcium than whole milk.

Just like foods with the 'superfood' tag, spirulina is a powerful antioxidant, preventing free radical damage in the body and enhancing immunity. It may also prevent various kinds of cancers and slow down the ageing process.

Rich in vitamins, minerals and beta-carotene, experts claim it also helps with a number of conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, depression and diabetes.

You can add a few grams of the powder to your juice or smoothie. Do not replace an entire meal with spirulina and consult a healthcare professional for the dosage. Those with autoimmune diseases should avoid taking it.
