Construction work for the geo-strategically sensitive Zojila tunnel has officially begun with Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari virtually initiating the ceremonial first blast. The 14.15-km long tunnel under Zojila pass on NH-1 will provide all-year and all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh and is expected to reduce travel time between the two from 3 hours to 15 minutes. The project holds strategic significance as Zojila Pass is situated at an altitude of 11,578 feet on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway and remains closed during winters due to heavy snowfall.
