In the wake of the new social media rules that came into effect on Wednesday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the tech giant is committed to complying with local laws and engage constructively as governments adopt regulatory frameworks.
He added that a free and open internet is "foundational", and that India has long traditions of that. Pichai also noted that technology is touching society in deeper and broader ways and the landscape is evolving at a fast pace.
The new IT rules for social media companies are aimed at making players like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram and Google more accountable and responsible for the content hosted on their platform.
