CNN has suspended prime time anchor Chris Cuomo 'indefinitely' over help he gave to his brother, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, while he was battling sex abuse allegations.

The decision came after the New York attorney general released new documents that included text messages and transcripts of interviews with investigators who led the probe into allegations against the governor.

CNN said the documents show "a greater level of Chris Cuomo's involvement in his brother's efforts than was previously known".

The documents also showed how Chris continuously pressed the governor's staff to let him play a larger role in his brother's defence.

Andrew Cuomo resigned in August over allegations of sexual and workplace harassment and is currently facing investigations over nursing home deaths during the coronavirus pandemic.
