A man driving a truck ran over and killed four members of a Muslim Canadian family in Ontario on Sunday evening. Police said that the attack was pre-meditated and motivated by hate towards Muslims.

The 20-year-old attacker fled the scene and was later arrested, police said.

"There is evidence that this was a planned, premeditated act, motivated by hate. It is believed that these victims were targeted because they were Muslim," the Ontario police said.

The victims include a 74-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl -- together representing three generations of the same family. The family immigrated from Pakistan about 14 years ago, according to media reports.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter that he was "horrified" by the news, adding that "Islamophobia has no place in any of our communities. This hate is insidious and despicable - and it must stop."
