Following a five-year-long campaign by students, the University of Cambridge in England announced on Thursday that it will fully divest from all direct and indirect investments in fossil fuel companies by 2030 and cut its greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2038.
The vice-chancellor, Prof Stephen Toope said, 'The university is responding comprehensively to a pressing environmental and moral need for action,' reports The Guardian.
While welcoming the announcement, The Cambridge Zero Carbon Society said, 'The decision sends a resounding signal to BP, Shell, and ExxonMobil that Cambridge University will stop profiting from companies decimating frontline communities and lobbying against environmental regulations.'
