Markets celebrate election results; Nifty ends highest in 6 days

Indian equities surged for the second straight session as investors watch the latest elections results even as the global markets remained buoyant. Here are the top market highlights for Thursday:

  • Nifty moved 1.53% higher to close near 16,600, while Sensex climbed more than 800 points to end at 55,464
  • In the election update, BJP is leading in four out of the five states with majority seats and AAP seems to be making government in Punjab
  • Stocks surged across sectors although the Nifty IT index closed a little lower
  • Hindustan Unilever, Tata Steel, Grasim, SBI and JSW Steel were the top gainers
  • Brent crude futures cooled off from the highs even as it was trading 5% in the green at $116/bbl
