'Broken heart syndrome' stems from the brain: Swiss researchers

Swiss researchers who have been studying people with a rare condition called 'broken heart syndrome' have discovered that the brain is actually a key player in causing the condition. Also known as takotsubo syndrome or TTS, it causes the heart to weaken and has been linked to the brain’s reaction to stress. TTS symptoms are similar to that of a heart attack like chest pain and breathlessness. The findings were published in the European Heart Journal.
