An explosion took place near the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar on Thursday, but no loss of life or injury were reported, according to officials. They said the explosion, suspected to be an improvised explosive device, took place around noon. There were also reports of firing after the explosion.
The blast came on the second anniversary of the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status.
Most shops were shut in parts of Srinagar on Thursday to mark two years since J&K was bifurcated into two union territories on August 5, 2019. According to the officials, apart from the blast the situation remained peaceful in the city.
However, shopkeepers in many areas alleged that police were forcing them to keep their establishments open. Many of them claimed police broke open the locks of their shops.
