As several states in India sound an alarm over the spread of the bird flu or Avian Influenza, you might be wondering what that means for your own food consumption. Here's what the World Health Organisation has to say:

  1. Eating chicken or eggs is safe as long as they are 'properly prepared and cooked.'
  2. Meat, whether it is hen or duck, should be cooked, in a way that all parts reach 70 degree Celsius to kill the virus.
  3. Avoid runny eggs. Cooking an egg till its yolk becomes firm is safe to eat.
  4. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after handling poultry or eggs.
