The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has appointed Emmy Award-winning TV producer-director Krishnendu Majumdar as its chairperson. Majumdar has been involved with BAFTA for the past 14 years, and is the first person of color to hold the position in BAFTA’s 73-year history. He is also the youngest chairperson in 35 years and will serve a three-year tenure. In a statement, Majumdar said 'it is vital to ensure that we support people of all backgrounds, races and genders and we will continue to be a leader for real change across our industry'. The move comes after BAFTA was widely criticised for their lack of diversity earlier this year.
