The Assam Police have arrested two people for “instigating” violence during the eviction drive in Darrang district on September 23 during which two people had died.

The two arrested people have been identified as Asmat Ali Ahmed and Chand Mamud.

Darrang Superintendent of Police Sushanta Biswa Sarma said that the duo instigated the protesters, and asked them not to leave their homes during the eviction.

Last week, the government’s eviction drive in Dholpur 3 village had turned violent, leaving two, including a 12-year-old, dead.

Police had fired at the protesters and the video of the incident showed a govt photographer stomping on the body of a protester who was shot. The video has triggered massive outrage and the photographer, Bijay Bania, was later arrested. He is currently in Guwahati jail.
