A photo journalist seen stomping on the body of a protester in Assam's Darrang district in the horrific video on Thursday has been arrested.

The Assam Police had opened fire on a group of Muslims who were protesting against a government eviction drive. Two protesters reportedly died in firing.

The disturbing video of the incident showed a cameraman lynching and desecrating what appears to be a lifeless body of a protestor after he falls down when policemen assault him with batons. The video of the incident triggered a widespread outrage.

But Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is adamant that the eviction drive will go on. The CM had tweeted that by carrying out the eviction drive he had fulfilled a promise he made during the election campaign this year.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the Assam’s BJP government after the video went viral. Rahul tweeted, Assam is on state-sponsored fire and he stands in solidarity with brothers and sisters in the northeastern state.
