Kanpur's Shamsuddin returned home after spending 28 years in Pakistan. His return set off Diwali-like celebration with his family and relatives waiting for him with garlands and sweets.

Shamsuddin, a shoemaker by profession, had moved to Pakistan with an acquaintance in 1992 on getting a 90-day visit visa, but decided to settle there after getting permanent residency in 1994.

However, in 2012, the Pakistan government accused him of being a spy, arrested him and locked him up at a jail in Karachi.

“I suffered a lot in that prison. My freedom is the best Diwali gift I could ask for,” Shamsuddin said.
