Afghan schoolgirls on Monday protested against a Taliban decision to ban girls from attending school.

Schoolgirls in Herat held banners and demanded they should be allowed to return to school and continue their studies. Students attending the protest said that forcing girls to stay away from school would leave an entire generation uneducated.

Taliban's minister of higher education had said girls would be given equal access to education, but in gender-segregated settings.

However, the Taliban-run education ministry have not mentioned when girls can return even though the group asked boys from grades six to 12 to go back to school, along with their male teacher.

Earlier this month the Taliban announced an all-male exclusively Taliban Cabinet but said it was an interim setup, offering some hope that a future government would be more inclusive as several of their leaders had promised.
