A historic first: a quartet of female referees officiate a men's football game

A female referee quartet made history in South America by being the first-ever to officiate a men's Copa Libertadores match on Wednesday. The quartet was led by Brazilian referee Edina Alves Batista, along with her compatriot Neuza Back and Chilean Cindy Nahuelcoy Jara as assistants. The fourth referee was Maria Belen Carvajal, also from Chile. The all-female team were officiating a Group A game between hosts Defensa Justicia and Ecuador's Independiente del Valle held in Argentina.
