Days after it informed the Parliament that it does not have a record of how many migrant workers died due to lockdown hardships, the govt informed the Rajya Sabha that 97 people died while travelling on the Shramik Special  trains.

In a written answer to a question posed by TMC MP Derek O’Brien on Friday, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal told the Upper House that based on the data provided by state police, 97 people have been reported dead till September 9 while travelling on special trains meant for migrant workers.

He also added that 87 bodies were sent for post-mortem and a total of 51 reports have been received from the state police. The reason for deaths in these reports have been shown as cardiac arrest/heart disease/brain hemorrhage/pre-existing chronic disease/chronic lung disease/chronic liver disease, Goyal said.
