Experts from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) have warned that four billion people could be overweight by 2050, with 1.5 billion of them obese, if the current global dietary trend towards processed foods continues.

The first-of-its-kind study found that global food demand will rise by 50% by mid-century, surpassing Earth’s capacity to sustain nature.

'The increasing waste of food and the rising consumption of animal protein means that the environmental impact of our agricultural system will spiral out of control,' lead author of the study published in the journal Nature said.
