At least 100 people are estimated to be missing after a powerful mudslide crashed in a town about 90 kms west of Tokyo, following heavy rains on Saturday. According to officials, the mudslide killed at least three people.
Hundreds of troops, fire fighters and other rescue workers toiled in thick mud, under heavy layer of rain and fog on Monday. Japan Self-Defense Forces have also joined the difficult and treacherous operation.
Twenty-three people stranded by the mudslide have been rescued, including three who were injured. Authorities have confirmed the safety of about 135 local residents who were stuck in the worst-hit areas.
